North Carolina community colleges are now legally allowed to admit illegal immigrants into their institutions. The new policy by the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges was approved Sept. 18. It reverses a 2007 decision to ban illegal immigrants.

The legality of allowing illegal immigrants into the system has been long debated.

Personal information for close to 2,000 current and prospective St. John Fisher College students may have fallen into the wrong hands as part of a security breach that involved a number of area colleges.

Buffalo State, Brockport and Monroe Community College were also affected when a laptop from SunGard, a college IT provider, was reported stolen on March 13.
