As the crowd chanted "Take it off, take it off," Nappy Roots member B. Stille bared his chest and gyrated for the screaming crowd. The rapper moved off the stage into the first row of fans, and the ladies pushed closer to place their dollar bills in the waistband of his jeans.
Such was the nature of Sunday night's Juice Jam concert. Key performers Nappy Roots tried, with moderate success, to bring the crowd into their act.
Opening act Gym Class Heroes kicked off the concert, and the crowd started feeling their vibe about halfway through the one-hour performance. Heads gently bobbed to the music and arms occasionally swayed with the beat.
However, as soon as Nappy Roots took the stage at Goldstein Auditorium, head bobbing and waving turned into cheering, screaming and jumping. The hip-hoppers gave a few shout-outs to Syracuse, then immediately started rapping.
Energy was high at the beginning of the Nappy Roots' act, as the rappers flowed into familiar rhymes and let the crowd finish the lyrics. After a few mediocre numbers, Nappy Roots members pointed out pretty ladies in the audience and broke into the well-received "Headz Up."
Halfway through their set, Nappy Roots performed hit single "Po' Folks" and the single "Round the Globe" from their second album. The group was quick to put in a few good words encouraging fans to buy their just-released album, Wooden Leather.
Between numbers, Nappy Roots interacted with the crowd, pulling stunts such as the PG-rated striptease of B. Stille. The rappers seemed to want the crowd's affection, as they grabbed hands and even gave hugs.
The group sampled various popular tracks to get the audience hyped, and initiated familiar crowd favorites, such as the chant, "Do my ladies run this mutha fucka, do my fellas run this..."
The crowd responded to such tactics, and joined the fun as the rappers announced "It's Nappy Hour!" As group members tried to get close to the audience, it was obvious that the first few rows of students were the most interactive in the performance.
