SUOC will provide the majority of the outdoor events planned for this weekend, beginning with a snowshoe hike at Beaver Lake on Friday afternoon. Students will get the chance to learn the fundamentals of snowshoeing - and use the snow to their advantage for a change. Saturday afternoon, SUOC will offer students the opportunity to snowshoe and build igloos on the Quad.
Last year's horse drawn carriage rides return for another round and will be available on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The carriages will leave from the front of Schine Student Center and will tour the Quad.
Not all cold weather activities will be held outdoors - Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion will offer several activities throughout the weekend. Starting Friday at 10 p.m., students can skate all night and have the chance to ride the Zamboni.
"It's always been a dream of mine to ride the Zamboni," said Jon Freidman, a freshman in The College of Arts and Sciences. "And now that the opportunity is available, I will definitely attend."
Tennity will also host "Skate with a Date" on Saturday night in celebration of Valentine's Day. Tennity will also be home to the women's club hockey team Sunday afternoon when the team takes on University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
University Union will sponsor an array of events this weekend, starting with the presentation of the movie "American Splendor" Thursday and ending with performances by comedians Dean Edwards and Pablo Francisco on Sunday night. Between these two events, the UU will sponsor a Bill Murray double feature with presentations of "Lost in Translation" and "Groundhog Day." The highlight of the weekend will be a performance by pop star Liz Phair on Saturday in Goldstein Auditorium.
"Having Liz Phair come and play in Goldstein is pretty cool," said Meghan Viens, a sophomore political science major. "It's always great to have a concert on campus."
Other musical attractions in the carnival include the Winter Carnival A Capella Concert on Friday night, featuring Groovestand, The Mandarins and Orange Appeal. The final musical performance of the weekend is sponsored by the Jabberwocky Café, Perc Place and the Syracuse University Rape, Advocacy, Prevention and Education Center and will feature the bands "Sandbox" and "The Last American Virgins."
Winter Carnival has always served as a well-deserved break from the long winter months, and the carnival's organizers expect more of the same this year.
"Winter Carnival is a great way for students to get out and enjoy the snow and cold," Viens said, "instead of complaining about how awful it is."
