Staff | Men's soccer goes unbeaten against Big 10 in 1st weekend

The Syracuse men's soccer team opened its season this weekend by finishing second at the Wolstein Classic in Columbus, Ohio. The Orange beat Penn State on Friday, 4-0, and battled Ohio State on Sunday to a scoreless draw.

Against the Nittany Lions, sophomore Hansen Woodruff scored a career-high four points, netting a goal and dishing two assists. Sophomore Tom Perevegyencev and junior Karol Wasielewski both scored the first goals of their Syracuse career. Junior Spencer Schomaker scored the other goal.

On Sunday, the Buckeyes out-shot the Orange, 32-5, but SU fended them off. Junior goalkeeper Robert Smith made three saves before suffering an injury. Rob Cavicchia played the final 10 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods.

(BOLD)Women's Soccer(BOLD)

The Orange women's soccer team traveled to Michigan over the weekend and split its opening two contests, winning its opener over Oakland (Mich.), 2-1, on Friday before losing by the same score to Michigan State on Sunday.

Junior defenseman Karrah Benson scored the game-winner for the Orange against Oakland with a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hatten preserved the victory with a dramatic penalty kick stop in the 81st minute.

On Sunday, freshman Megan Bellingham, a second-half substitute, netted her first career goal to put the Orange within one of Michigan State, but the Spartans prevailed, 2-1.

(BOLD)Cross Country(BOLD)

The Syracuse B men's and women's cross country teams started their season this weekend at the Harry Lang Invitational hosted by Colgate. The men's team posted a first place finish in the 6,000-meter run, while the women took second place in the 4,200-meter run.

SU freshman Erin Schirm won the 6,000 meter event with a time of 19:33.00. In all, the Orange men had six runners place in the top 10 at the event.

The women's squad was paced by senior Jillian Kosinski, who finished fifth in the 4,200-meter race with a time of 17:15.00. Lisa Giacometti (8th) and Deanna Schmidt (10th) also finished in the top 10.
