Q&A with Stephen Lynch

D.O.: You toured with Jeff Foxworthy and Mitch Hedberg, any good stories from your time working with them?
S.L.: Well, I toured with Mitch, which was fun. But Jeff Foxworthy was one show, and it was my very first paid performance ever. And it was awful. It was the worst ever. It was in front of 2,000 of his crazy drunken fans at the Orange County Speedway, and they had no interest in little Stephen Lynch and his guitar songs. But I didn't let that discourage me; somehow I found the courage to continue.
D.O.: Tell me about tonight's show. Anything about the show, the SU campus, the weather, the trip up? How has the experience been?
S.L.: It was a great show, more people showed up than I figured would. But they responded really well, even to the AIDS song, which could have been touchy. But the people laughed. I guess people have a sense of humor when it comes down to it, even though these things are a little bit edgy, maybe teetering on the offensive. To me, it's all about being funny, and I have no interest in being offensive because I don't think that's funny. Something I might say might happen to offend somebody, but I really think everybody seemed to get it. I didn't see too many people walk out, so that's a good sign.
