Injuries Abound as NFL Kicks off 2008 Season:
Knee injuries benched both New England quarterback Tom Brady and San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman for the season. As GMs and fantasy footballers everywhere scrambled to prepare for life without their superstars, the rest of us shed a few tears - of joy. The Patriots, the team that had a near-perfect season last year, still won its game without Brady. So naturally, we all want to see how they fare without the team's golden boy for a whole season.
Kanye West arrested, charged with vandalism at LAX:
Welcome to the good life, indeed. The hip hop star and his bodyguard allegedly attacked members of the paparazzi, destroying $10,000 worth of camera equipment. While being restrained by police, West reportedly tried to attack one paparazzo who claimed to have filmed the incident. Smart. Once West arrived at his destination late at night, he apparently blamed his tardiness on rock band Pearl Jam and scolded his fans for saying he didn't "give it his all."
Bloc Party, Talib Kweli, Ra Ra Riot rock Juice Jam:
Not even a rainy forecast could halt the fifth annual music festival, held on South Campus on Sunday. A record crowd of more than 4,000 showed up for the concert: a unique blend of indie-rock (Bloc Party, Ra Ra Riot) and hip hop (Kweli). In sadder news, the day also saw crowds bid farewell to the festival's infamous skydiving tank. Not even a eulogy from Ra Ra Riot singer Wesley Miles could lighten concert-goers' moods after the loss of the free fall simulator - reportedly due to UU's concerns over the sound quality. Come on, UU, what do people really go to Juice Jam for?
SU Football humiliated by Akron in home opener:
A road loss to Northwestern is one thing, but a double-digit defeat against a 4-8 team from the Mid-American Conference? At this point, it's looking like a team of middle-schoolers could give the Orange trouble. Head coach Greg Robinson's seat is beyond "hot" now; it's sizzling. Sit on this one and you'll get third-degree burns. With another loss a near certainty against No. 17 Penn State this weekend, the question of whether Robinson's tenure will go into next season is turning into how much more of this one will he see before he gets the sack.
Landmark Theatre gears up for "Express" premiere:
As lane dividers on downtown streets are painted orange and the theater prepares to unroll the "orange carpet" in anticipation of "The Express," the question still remains whether audiences can really deal with yet another formulaic, true-story, sports movie. Given the film's cast and the date of the premiere - a month before the proposed wide release - it seems that not even the studios think so.
