Recounting the story of Syracuse University football great Ernie Davis - the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy
This tribute to the life and achievements of legendary Syracuse University running back Ernie Davis may not open nationwide until Oct. 10, but Friday night marks the world premiere of "The Express" - right here in Syracuse.
The film stars Rob Brown ("Finding Forrester") as Davis and Dennis Quaid ("Vantage Point," "The Day After Tomorrow") as then-ead football coach Ben Schwartzwalder. It documents the story of how Davis followed his hero, Jim Brown, to SU and led the team to the 1959 national championship. In 1961, he became the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy.
Before the movie, its stars, Brown and Davis, alongside surviving members of the 1959 championship team will take part in a special "orange carpet" ceremony - featuring vintage 1950s convertibles on display and music by the Coasters. Bleachers will be erected alongside the Salina Street display, enabling spectators to watch it all unfold.
Tickets go on sale for the general public on Friday. Screenings will run on both Friday and Saturday nights, and special $44 ticket packages are still available.
