When Kim Coyle began her field hockey career, she could not have known how important the sport would become for her. Coyle's field hockey career began in eighth grade, when her friend persuaded her to join the team. Although she did not like the sport at first, the sophomore back continued to play and has become one of the up-and-coming stars for Syracuse field hockey.

In only her second season, Coyle has become a starting back for the No. 2 team in the nation. Syracuse will play at Providence tonight at 6 p.m.

Two years ago, Coyle redshirted due to injury. The year away from actual play was hard for Coyle, but the feeling she experienced when she joined the team the following year made it worth the wait.

"It was so good to get back on the field and be back on the team," Coyle said. "Not that I wasn't, but I felt so much more a part of the team, playing and being an impact player. It was a lot of fun."

Coyle played in all 19 games last season and has played in each game so far this season. In only two seasons on the team, Coyle has become a high-energy player the team can rely on. Her intensity runs high. At the mentioning of Coyle's name, Bradley gleamed.

"(Kim is) a worker, intense and passionate, and a fighter," said SU head coach Ange Bradley. "She's just got that energy. You look into her eyes and you know that she's going after it every moment out there. She's a worker."

Bradley said Coyle refuses to rest or take a break. But Coyle does not just inspire the team with her hard work. Heather Doran, a senior back, said that Coyle often helps to keep the mood loose in practice with her personality.

"I think Kim has a way of getting everyone excited," Doran said. "Her personality is a really good personality to have on a team because she's always happy and very spunky.

"She's always getting people laughing and that's always a good teammate to have: someone who's always getting you up and always getting on."
