For Jackson Droney, there is a lot more to Remembrance Week than simply recalling the lives lost on Pan Am Flight 103 - it's also about education.

Droney, a senior policy studies and international relations major, remembers watching television one day after the Virginia Tech shootings. There was a panel reviewing the tragedy led by four students, one of whom was from Syracuse University. When a reporter compared the event to Pan Am 103, the SU student said the event was before his time and changed the subject.

"I remember being so struck by that and thinking what a disservice to all the families of the victims and to the university," he said.

Droney is determined to make sure that doesn't happen again.

"We have a responsibility not just to remember the students during Remembrance Week, but to educate the campus and the student body so that they are aware that this affects their whole community," Droney said. "It's part of what it means to go to Syracuse University."

Droney is commemorating Peter Pierce, a graduate architecture student who was on his way back from Florence, Italy when the plane went down.

"He had a wife and kids and I'm from a large family," Droney explained. "We were also both very involved academically, so I definitely feel a connection with him."
