Javaid, a senior political science, economics and history major, has interned at the U.S. State Department. Tobin wanted to be a television sports announcer.
Terez Iacovino, a senior printmaking major at Syracuse University and friend of Javaid, studied abroad with her in Florence. Iacovino said she can see why SU selected Javaid as one of this year's Remembrance Scholars, taking into account Javaid's character, outlook and ability to serve as a trustworthy friend.
"She's really easygoing," Iacovino said. "She was always the mediator in Florence. She was really good at bringing people together."
Javaid came to SU after she was selected to be part of the Coronat Scholars Program. Kevin Eggleston, a junior political science and television, radio and film major and Daily Orange columnist, met Javaid through the Coronat program. He said he got a chance to learn about Javaid's character and saw firsthand the contributions she makes to the SU campus.
The program played a significant role in helping Javaid and Eggleston define their goals as students at SU. Eggleston said being selected for the program motivated him to do more as a student and as an individual.
"It meant a lot for me and I'm sure it meant a lot for her," he said.
