Cheer: Something good has finally come out of the economic hard times. CNN recently reported that the International Shark Attack File, located on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, documented that there were 71 shark attacks in 2007 and only 59 in 2008. The ISAF is crediting the hard economic times for keeping the would-be bait out of the water and out of the jaws of fate. Ten percent of the United States may be out of a job, but at least there are 12 fewer victims to this national epidemic. Right?

Cheer/Jeer: You can now own the actual gates of Michael Jackson's Neverland ranch. Why you would want the gates in the first place is beyond us, and even more questionable is why anyone would allow Jackson to take the gates down. The King of Pop is auctioning off more than 2,000 of his personal possessions, including his famous white glove, his gold and platinum records, his own original artwork, his American Musical Award for "Thriller," oh, and a pair of rhinestone-trimmed socks from 1981. The Smithsonian should buy some of these items - if the museum has Fonzie's jacket and Archie Bunker's chair, why not Jackson's white glove? They could do without the socks though.

Jeer: SU 'announced' new plans for SU Showcase, the latest incarnation of the university's day of academic engagement. The events are supposed to be geared toward student involvement, which is all well and good, if there were actually definite events announced. Hill Communications announced there is to be some type of breakfast at an undisclosed location and some type of music act and speaker that is not Guster. Newsflash: It would be wise to have something slightly interesting to announce before announcing anything at all.

Cheer: Some students from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry have joined other SUNY schools in signing a petition against the recent SUNY tuition hike which gave 80 percent of the tuition increase back to the state rather than the university. Cheer for student activism taking on the state and a cheer for making it environmentally friendly since the petition is online.
