The Syracuse track and field teams move on to the second portion of their postseason schedule this weekend, as the men's team heads to the IC4A outdoor championship and the women's team is off to the ECAC championships.
On the men's side, SU qualified a 15-man team, including six sprinters and hurdlers, seven distance runners and two jumpers, to this weekend's meet in Princeton, N.J. The team is led by Kyle Heath, the Big East runner-up in the steeplechase, and Bernard Bush, the runner-up in the long jump.
For the women, 12 members of the team qualified for the ECAC meet, also held in Princeton. The squad is led by Uhunoma Osazuwa, the Big East champion in the heptathalon, and Flings Owusu, who came in third place in the 100-meter dash.
After this weekend, Syracuse hopes to compete at the NCAA Championships. The East Region Championship is held May 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C. National championships are the following weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. The Orange currently has 10 athletes with NCAA provisional times but no NCAA automatic qualifying times.
Rowing heads to Eastern Springs
The Syracuse men's rowing team is in top form heading into the Eastern Sprints on Sunday. The team dominated its last meet, the Conlan Cup, last Saturday, winning three of the four races including the crucial Varsity Eight. Overall, the Orange has amassed its No. 10 ranking due to a strong performance from its top boat. The Varsity Eight has finished in the top two in each of the team's last three meets now, including a second-place finish en route to capturing the Goes Trophy on April 18.
For the women, the Eastern Sprints are a week later, starting on Sunday, May 17, but the team is riding just as high. At last Saturday's Big East Championship, the Orange finished in second place overall with the Varsity Eight coming in at fourth place with a time of 6:43.507. The team is drawing strength from its solid all-around lineup, with the second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four all finishing in the top three in the championships.
