Girl Talk will headline Juice Jam this Sunday at noon at Skytop Field on South Campus. Indie rock group Jack's Mannequin and rap act The Cool Kids will open the welcome back concert sponsored by University Union.

The acts range from three different genres. But aside from the concert's variety, some students aren't thrilled with this year's artists.

"It seems like there's not a huge headline act, I've noticed," said Sam Knehans, a freshman magazine journalism major.

Junior anthropology major Martin Fernandez would have preferred different artists.

"I would have liked to see someone with a little more substance than The Cool Kids if they were going to get a rap artist," he said.

UU encountered difficulty trying to secure more popular artists for this year's festival because of a scheduling conflict with MTV's Video Music Awards. Many artists were unavailable to perform at the concert because of the VMA's Sept. 13 airdate, the latest the awards show has been held in the past 10 years.

UU President Darren Goldberg said his members chose the date of Juice Jam before they left campus in the spring. After that, the date is practically sealed and out of their hands, he added.

After UU submits the slated date for Juice Jam, the university starts planning the logistics of the event - from hiring people to rescheduling conflicting events at the South Campus site.

Still, Goldberg is confident these conflicts haven't affected turnout for the show.

"There has been such great buzz with the lineup. I think we hit the spot of appealing to a wide variety of students, and I think the ticket numbers are showing that," Goldberg said.

Schine Box Office sold 2,818 tickets by Wednesday afternoon, leaving 2,181 tickets still unsold.

As the event nears, many students have been gearing up for the popular weekend show.

"I'm really excited. I think (the line-up) is really good," said Henia Gringarten, an undecided freshman.

Other students like Brandon Schwartz, a sophomore in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, are going to the concert just for the atmosphere rather than the slated artists.

"I mean Girl Talk is alright," he said. "Other than that though, it's a good time. It's a great place to meet people and it's just a lot of fun."

so like its only for SU students because that would be lame i mean sure good for the college kids but why wouldn't you want to capitalize on this opportunity i feel that if not that excludes a lot of fans that will just add to the frustration. (Continued…)
