Alfonso Davis, Democrat
Key issue:
o Jobs: Davis hopes to bring "green" jobs to Syracuse, providing opportunities for technological innovation. He also supports the growth of small businesses.
Plans for the Hill:
o Davis supports the deconstruction of Interstate 81, which physically separates the university from the city.
o He wishes to build cohesion with the university and the city by encouraging student organizations to volunteer as mentors in the community.
Quotable:
"We have to break that stigma of us versus them. It's not us versus them. It's all of us, and that's a priority for bringing SU and the city together, breaking that stigma down."
Joe Nicoletti, Democrat
Key issue:
o Jobs: Bolster the local job market and restructure the economy of the city by moving economic development into the mayor's office. Establish green technology jobs and engage minority populations in economic growth.
Plans for the Hill:
o Strengthen partnerships between city schools and higher education institutions like Syracuse University.
o Served on a taskforce assigned to build the relationship between the city and SU.
Quotable:
"People are not taken in by political rhetoric. There's not a Republican way and there's not a Democratic way. There's the right way."
Carmen Harlow, Democrat
Key issue:
o City: As former deputy of Public Works commissioner, he wants to make sure people receive prompt service, with better citywide trash pickup. Also wants to put violation fees to better use.
Plans for the Hill:
o Work with university-area landlords to make sure student housing has less litter. Says students have to treat Public Works with greater respect.
o Get students involved in all areas of the city, not just a few select locations.
Quotable:
"You just have to look at where the revenue is coming at, what's being spent, who is getting more than others, who is not getting anything, which side of town is not getting this, which type of people aren't getting this, and then make sure we're fair with everybody. We're not going to solve everything. But it's a start, and it's about being fair with everybody."
