Mark Whitacre had the potential to become an executive in the agricultural business, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM). But when the FBI intervenes and appoints him as an informant, the potential job gets pushed to the back burner.

"The Informant!," a movie based off the 2000 book by Kurt Eichenwald, details a true story of corporate whistle-blowing and police confusion. It opens in theaters Friday, Sept. 18 but University Union is also allowing students to check out the movie prior to the release date: UU will pre-screen the film at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Gifford Auditorium.

The preview "caught my attention and I think the movie could be good; I'm definitely interested in seeing it," said Dimitri Killy, a sophomore computer science major.

In the film, executives for ADM have been holding meetings to raise the price of food additives and the FBI begins to get suspicious. That's where Whitacre comes in.

Matt Damon stars as Whitacre, the intelligent, yet imaginative, "spy" who envisions himself becoming a hero by helping the FBI to crack the case. But the over-eager, and enthusiastic, Whitacre frustrates the FBI agents and keeps them on their toes.

The plot thickens when it becomes clear that, while working for the FBI, Whitacre is embezzling millions from ADM, and due to excessive worry of being discovered, Whitacre nears emotional breakdown while the FBI becomes more and more exasperated. But no will know what happens next until the movie is released.

The movie is right in line with current issues about embezzlement and corruption. A cast which includes many fresh faces, infuses sarcasm and wit, creating an entertaining and easy to watch movie.

"'The Informant!' looks funny and I love Matt Damon. It seems like a funnier mix of two movies he has been in, 'The Departed' and 'Ocean's 13'," said Kati Lapi a sophomore marketing management major. "It almost seems like a spoof on Damon's character in 'The Departed'. I'm excited to see it."
