Men's Soccer

The Syracuse men's soccer team scored a season-high three goals in a 3-0 rout of Rutgers Friday, ending a seven-game skid and earning its first Big East victory of the season.

The win avenged a 3-2 overtime loss to Rutgers (5-4-0, 3-2-0 Big East) on Oct. 11, 2008.

SU (2-8-0, 1-4-0 Big East) seniors Tom Perevegyencev, Hansen Woodruff and Elliott Townsend all found the back of the net against the Scarlet Knights. Woodruff's goal was the 25th of his career, which ties him with Jamie Shannon (1992-95) and Jeff Knittle (1995-98) on SU's all-time career goals list.

Perevegyencev and Woodruff's goals came in the span of 1:59 and put the Scarlet Knights at a 2-0 deficit midway through the first half. Perevegyencev started the scoring at the 31:14 mark when he beat Rutgers goalie Adam Klink with a shot to the lower left corner off a pass from sophomore L.J. Papaleo.

It was the first career shutout for Orange redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones and SU's only shutout of the season. Jones played all 90 minutes and made five second-half saves in the match.

The Orange continues conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 7 when it returns home for a matchup against Villanova.

Cross Country

In one of the biggest meets of the year, the Syracuse men's and women's cross country teams placed first and second, respectively, at the inaugural Wisconsin Adidas Invitational in Verona, Wisc.

Defeating two top 10 teams, No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 10 Georgetown, the Orange men scored 41 points in the 8-kilometer race to capture the title. Sophomore Tito Medrano, who finished third with a time of 23:56, led the Orange to victory. Senior Brad Miller, 24:02, sophomore Griff Graves, 24:06, and senior Dan Busby, 24:11, rounded out the top 10 individual finishes for the Orange.

The No. 21 women finished behind No. 29 Duke, to capture second place in Madison. The meet included seven of the top 30 nationally-ranked squads. Setting the pace for the Orange women was junior Katie Hursey, who placed seventh overall with a time of 17:26. Junior Catherine Desarle, 17:34, sophomore Lauren Penney, 17:36, and senior Maegan Krifchin, 17:38, were also top finishers for the Orange.

Prior to the meet the Syracuse men were unranked in the national polls, but were ranked fourth in the Northeast Region.

After an idle week, the Orange men and women will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., the site of the National Championships, to compete in Pre-Nationals on Saturday, Oct. 17.
