A dean committee officially began the search for a permanent dean of Hendricks Chapel, selecting 12 preliminary candidates, including Kelly Sprinkle, current interim dean of Hendricks Chapel. The committee, led by Barbara Fought, recently announced the three finalists, and Sprinkle was not one of them.
The committee has yet to give a detailed explanation to the SU community, raising speculation about Sprinkle's elimination from the running.
In 17 months as interim dean, Sprinkle dealt with budget cuts, staff transitions and program changes, as well as handling the deaths of nine students and two professors. Two of the students had been studying abroad, and Sprinkle flew to Madrid, Spain, and Strasbourg, France, to be there for the families and SU Abroad students. In addition, he organized support groups and religious services for students mourning on campus.
Both Hendricks faculty and the Syracuse University community were impressed by the way he handled these challenges.
Sprinkle handled the unfortunate events with poise and compassion, so the announcement that he was not a finalist is shocking.
Apart from dealing with a never-ending set of terrible situations, Sprinkle also worked hard to improve current Chapel programs, such as the Interfaith Student Council, developed in April.
Hendricks faculty expressed discontent with the choices, saying Sprinkle has only done positive things for the Chapel.
Though the other candidates may be better on paper, Sprinkle has already proven himself on campus to those who have worked with him and has established many positive relationships within the student body.

Shocking but not surprising! Dean Sprinkle has integrity. Everyone trusts and respects him. Chancellor Cantor and Dean Wolfe are just the opposite. Cantor is afraid of students and Wolfe only wants to look good. (Continued…)

What a disappointment- SU's hypocrisy speaks volumes. What more could Dean Sprinkle have done- a true disgrace - as a future alum who will make a lot of money, my money will not go here. (Continued…)

Kelley should have been given the job months ago! How ironic is it that Tom Wolfe and his vice presidents never applied for their current jobs but were appointed by the Chancellor or Dr. (Continued…)

Kelley might be great. Maybe someone else might be greater?
They are hiring a person for a JOB. Isnt the idea to find the best candidate possible? Even if that means going outside your organization?
