Make your Coat Count
Yeah, it's cold, but that doesn't make it OK to look like an Eskimo. Invest in a comfortable, warm and attractive coat. Double-breasted suits are all over the runway this season, so look the part by donning a peacoat.
If the peacoat seems too overdone, take sophomore fashion design major Peter Boskey's advice. "Pop the collar for some drama," he said. "And make sure the hem hits at the fingertips."
Mix Casual with Formal
The biggest mistake a guy can make is wearing total slob clothes because he woke up feeling lazy. Instead of throwing on a hoodie with that T-shirt and jeans, grab a blazer. It completely ups the ante on the look without constricting the body.
Jake Couri, founder and design director of Jake Couri Clothing, said it's important to mix it up.
"You don't want to be too formal or too casual," the junior jewelry and metalsmithing major said. "Find a balance."
The Ultimate Staple
No man's closet is complete without a v-neck sweater - or one in every color. They've been an essential part of men's fashion for years, and they're not going anywhere.
"V-necks work for almost every guy because they make your shoulders look broader and therefore your waist smaller," Peter Boskey said.
Every guy needs the basics - gray, black and navy - but trying out a bright yellow or deep crimson will give any look a punch.
Scarf Yourself
Paris and Milan were full of over-the-top, larger-than-life scarves this year. Andrew Ellis, a senior retail management major, said the bigger, the better.
"When I wear scarves," he said, "I want to feel like I'm wrapped in blankets."
But don't let that tail run free. Be sure to wrap it around, creating a collar effect. Also take note that not all scarves are created equal.
"It's really about material," Jake Couri said.
Jersey blends and cashmere, if not too expensive, are the best option.
R.I.P. Skinnys
Let it be known: The much maligned genital-crushing pants are officially not cool. European designers are taking the lead in heading in a slouchier direction. Take mind that slouchy does not equal baggy.
"Find something in between," Jake Couri said. "Like a fitted jean with a tapered effect."
Ellis said that American style is finally catching up with Europeans when it comes to pants. "Skinny is out, slouch is in, and baggy will never be okay," he said.
It's Not a Purse, It's My Satchel
Nothing says "I don't give a crap" like a guy wearing a man bag. It's easy to write them off as feminine, but really, there are few other options. Backpacks weren't meant to continue on with you on your journey to college.
"Don't be afraid to take risks," Andrew Ellis said. "Girls love when guys dress a little different. Stand out above the crowd."
