It was a great Halloween for the Syracuse men's and women's cross country teams.
For the first time in program history, the men's squad captured the Big East Championship. Led by a fourth-place finish sophomore Pat Dupont (24:51), Syracuse pulled off the upset, beating the defending national champions, No. 10 Georgetown.
The SU men boasted five top-15 finishers in the 8,000-meter race. Senior Jeff Scull (25:11), sophomore Tito Medrano (25:12) and seniors Dan Busby (25:15) and Brad Miller followed Dupont in the top 15. Sophomore Forrest Misenti and junior Stephen Murdock finished in 17th and 18th place, respectively.
Prior to Saturday, the best finish for a Syracuse men's cross country team was in 1980, when the team captured third place. Last year, the Orange men finished in fifth at the Big East Championship.
On the women's side, Syracuse placed third, trailing only to defending conference champion No. 2 Villanova and No. 4 West Virginia. The Wildcats won its second straight title, while the Mountaineers took second.
Syracuse was led by junior Katie Hursey (21:30), who finished eighth overall. Senior Maegan Krifchin (21:49), juniors Catherine Desarle (21:51) and Rebekah MacKay (21:52) and sophomore Natalie Busby (22:20) rounded out the top-five runners for the Orange.
SU continues its national championship hunt, as it travels to Boston in two weeks to compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional. Regionals will be the last meet until the season culminates at the national championship meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on November 23.
Volleyball
The Syracuse volleyball team (18-9, 7-4 Big East) lost its third and fourth game in a row this weekend, when the Orange played at Louisville on Friday and Cincinnati on Sunday. The losing streak comes after the team had won six straight Big East games.
Against Louisville, Syracuse could not take advantage of a dominating performance by senior Sarah Morton. She notched a season-high 21 kills but did not get enough help from the rest of her teammates. Freshman Samantha Hinz had the next highest kill tally with seven, and the Cardinals won the match, 3-1.
Then, the Orange struggled offensively again when it played Cincinnati on Sunday. After taking the first set against the Bearcats, Syracuse tallied only 21 kills in the next three sets, losing the match, 3-1. Morton led the team again with 11 kills.
The Orange currently ranks sixth in the Big East.
