Nader Maroun became the new District 5 common councilor Tuesday night in a landslide victory.

In Tuesday's general election, Maroun, 62, the Democratic and Working Families Party candidate, faced Republican, Independent and Conservative Party nominee Tristan Daedalus, 21.

Syracuse's fifth district includes the Syracuse University area, including Thornden Park, neighborhoods east and north of campus, and going as far east as Le Moyne College.

Maroun took 73.6 percent of the vote, compared to Daedalus' 26.3 percent. Maroun took 3,262 voters, while Daedalus posted just 1,165, according to unofficial results from the Onondaga County Board of Elections.

Maroun works in corporate relations at Bart-Rich Enterprises Inc. He earned his master's degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology and his bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Oswego. Daedalus is a student at SUNY Buffalo. He is currently a member of the 5th Ward on the Syracuse Republican Committee, and is involved in Eastwood Neighborhood Watch.

Maroun will replace the current District 5 common councilor, Lance Denno, who will become an at-large common councilor in January.
