The five rules of smart gambling

Part of the college experience is experiencing situations out of your comfort zone, whether it is taking classes in subjects you are unfamiliar with, or reaching out to someone of a different race, color or sexual orientation than you.

During your four years at Syracuse University, take at least one night and forget the routine frat parties, visits to Armory Square or the Marshall Street bars. Next time you find yourself with nothing to do on a weekend, I highly recommend you make a visit to Verona, home of Turning Stone Casino. The legal age to gamble in the state of New York is 18, so most college students can get in.

Rule number one: make sure you go in with a small quantity of money. I was dragged to Turning Stone for the first time last month with a thin wallet. I remembered learning in my Value Investing course with Professor Fernando Diz, "An investment operation is one, which upon thorough analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, promises safety of principal and an adequate return."

I repeated this mantra throughout the night. No matter what, I was determined to walk out with the same amount of money I walked in with and even leave with some extra bills in my pocket.

Rule number two: set a realistic goal for yourself. Mine was to earn my safety of principal back and leave with a satisfactory return, which I set at 100 percent. For example, if I were to go in with $50, I'd want to win 50 more dollars, leaving with $100 total.

I quickly developed a rhythm at the Black Jack tables. At one point, I had won 11 hands in a row and was up more than 400 percent, which was well past my goal. I was getting so "lucky" that the inspector was watching my every move to make sure I wasn't cheating or card counting.

Nevertheless, greed took over, and I broke rule number three: do not get tempted to keep playing after accomplishing your safety of principal and adequate return goals. Learn to pocket the change, and call it a night.

This is one of the dorkiest things I've ever read. I like it. Learned a lot.
